Model Overview

The GAC Trumpchi GA6 is a D-segment sedan introduced by GAC Motor under its Trumpchi marque, serving as a strategic model in the brand's sedan portfolio. The model underwent three key developmental phases: the first generation (launched in late 2014), a mid-cycle facelift (2016 model), and the all-new second generation (2019). Built on GAC's G-CPMA cross-platform modular architecture, the second-generation GA6 was launched on 23 August 2019, priced between RM108,800 and RM168,800. In February 2022, an annual model update streamlined the lineup to three variants, with recommended retail prices adjusted to between RM108,800 and RM146,800. As of 2026, the entire GA6 lineup has been discontinued.

Positioned as a D-segment family sedan, its key selling points include generous cabin space courtesy of a wheelbase exceeding 2.8 metres, a dual 12.3-inch integrated screen setup, and a Level 2 advanced driver assistance system (ADAS). Across the entire range, power comes from a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine paired with an Aisin 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox.

Design Language

The all-new GA6 (2019 model) showcases GAC Trumpchi's third-generation design language—featuring the "Flying Dynamics 3.0" front fascia layout and the "Light & Shadow Sculpture 3.0" styling philosophy. Up front, prominent horizontal chrome slats create a wide-stance visual impact, complemented by triple-unit dot-matrix LED headlamps. Along the sides, a continuous character line accentuates its elongated silhouette, while the rear features a full-width "Skyward Line" LED tail lamp cluster underlined by silver chrome garnishes. For the 2022 model year, standard LED headlamps were upgraded to matrix LED units, alongside a newly added Moonlight Grey exterior paint borrowed from the Empow.

In terms of dimensions, the all-new GA6 measures 4,891 mm long, 1,850 mm wide, and 1,505 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2,815 mm—representing a 95 mm wheelbase stretch over the original model. It has a kerb weight of 1,455 kg and a 55-litre fuel tank capacity.

Inside, the all-new GA6 is crafted around the "maximum passenger cabin" philosophy, offering two interior themes: "Silk and Bamboo Melody" (light-toned) and "Crafted Gold" (dark-toned). Higher-spec variants get dual 12.3-inch integrated widescreen displays, whereas entry and mid-tier trims settle for a 7-inch digital instrument cluster paired with a 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen. The dashboard is trimmed in brushed metal finishes, complemented by woodgrain inserts and chrome accents, delivering a sophisticated and upmarket cabin atmosphere.

Powertrain & Performance

Under the bonnet, the all-new GA6 is powered across the board by a 4A15J1 1.5-litre four-cylinder direct-injection turbo petrol engine, featuring GCCS combustion control and DCVVT dual continuous variable valve timing technologies. It delivers a maximum output of 124 kW (169 PS) and 265 Nm of peak torque, with maximum torque sustained across a wide band between 1,700 and 4,000 rpm. Power is sent to the front wheels via an Aisin 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission. The official 0-100 km/h sprint is completed in 8.8 seconds, with a top speed rated at 200 km/h.

As for fuel economy, the NEDC combined fuel consumption is rated at 6.6 L/100 km, while the WLTC combined figure stands at 6.78 L/100 km, with optimal combined fuel consumption reaching as low as 6.3 L/100 km. The engine meets China VI emission standards and is compatible with RON 92 unleaded petrol.

Looking back at its powertrain history, the first-generation GA6 (2014–2016 models) offered 1.6T and 1.8T petrol engines paired with a 5-speed manual and a 7-speed dry dual-clutch transmission respectively, delivering 116 kW and 130 kW. A 1.5T engine option was introduced following the 2016 mid-cycle facelift.

Chassis & Handling

Underneath, the all-new GA6 rides on GAC's G-CPMA architecture, featuring front MacPherson struts and a rear multi-link independent suspension setup. Suspension components have received lightweight treatment, with front and rear bearing knuckles made from lightweight alloys to sharpen suspension response. Steering is handled by an electric power steering (EPS) system offering three selectable modes (Comfort, Standard, and Sport) to vary steering weight according to driver preference. Braking duties are managed by ventilated front discs and solid rear discs with an electronic parking brake (EPB), achieving an official 100-0 km/h emergency stopping distance of 35.45 metres. High-spec models are fitted with 215/50 R17 Michelin Primacy 4 tyres, striking a balance between handling and road refinement.

Three drive modes are available: NORMAL, SPORT, and ECO. The chassis is tuned to strike a balance between ride comfort and road-holding stability, effectively soaking up road imperfections while delivering a planted, reassuring feel at high cruising speeds. During slalom tests, front-end turn-in remains reasonably direct, and the rear suspension allows a slight amount of slip near the limit to aid cornering exit, though its substantial vehicle dimensions remain palpable. Overall, the dynamic setup is primarily tailored for everyday family commuting.

Cabin & Features

Inside the cabin, the all-new GA6 adopts a dual-screen dashboard layout, where premium trims boast twin 12.3-inch displays with cross-screen data sharing. The infotainment system integrates Tencent Auto Intelligence, supporting fast voice recognition (10 ms wake-up time to operate media, navigation, power windows, climate control, sunroof, etc.). The 2022 model introduced Huawei HiCar connectivity, wireless screen mirroring, and a wireless smartphone charger. Additionally, the ADiGO connected in-car ecosystem and Tencent platform support custom Driver ID profiles to automatically retrieve personalised driving settings.

In terms of comfort and convenience amenities, flagship grades come equipped with a bespoke Harman premium sound system delivering Hi-Fi acoustic performance. Automatic climate control and rear air conditioning vents are standard across the range. Top-spec variants further gain a panoramic sunroof, 32-colour intelligent ambient lighting with 8-level brightness adjustment, an automatic air quality management system with a PM2.5 sensor, keyless entry with push-start ignition, and a power-adjustable driver's seat with memory function. Boot capacity easily accommodates daily cargo needs, with the added versatility of split-folding rear seats.

Safety & Intelligent Driving

On the safety front, the 2022 GA6 Premium variant and above are equipped with a full Level 2 advanced driver assistance suite. This includes Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Integrated Cruise Assist, Traffic Jam Assist (TJA), Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), Lane Change Assist, Blind Spot Monitoring, and Fully Automated Parking.

For active safety, the entire lineup is equipped with Bosch ESP 9.3 electronic stability control as standard. In the 2022 lineup, the Elite variant gained front side airbags; the Deluxe variant added LED headlamps and front/rear curtain airbags; while the Premium variant received a 360-degree surround-view camera, automatic headlamps, rain-sensing wipers, and anti-pinch functionality on all four power windows.

In terms of passive safety, the rigid body structure utilizes ultra-high-strength steel, securing a 5-star crash safety rating from C-NCAP. Dual front airbags, ISOFIX child seat anchor points, and a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS) are fitted as standard across the range, with higher variants adding side airbags and full-length curtain airbags.

Market Performance & Review

The GA6's market journey traversed a full cycle—from initial brief success with the first generation to a prolonged slump in its second generation. The original GA6 (2014–2016 models) hit its annual sales peak in 2017 with approximately 25,000 units. However, recurring complaints of shift shudder, abnormal noises, and oil leaks associated with the early Fiat-sourced 7-speed dry dual-clutch gearbox severely tarnished the model's reputation. The second-generation model experienced a promising start, recording a monthly peak of 2,940 units in November 2019; yet sales plummeted post-2020, registering just 211 units across the entire 2023 calendar year and hitting an all-time low of a single unit in April 2023. As of 2026, the GA6 is officially listed as discontinued across all major automotive portals.

Owner sentiment remains largely polarized. Praises center around its commodious cabin (with the 2,815 mm wheelbase providing ample rear legroom), the futuristic dual-screen dashboard layout, the smooth and linear power delivery from the Aisin 6AT, reasonable real-world fuel economy hovering around 6.6 L/100 km, and solid build quality (with a complaint-to-sales ratio of 0.8‰, well below the industry benchmark of 1.5‰). Its 5-star C-NCAP safety rating also provided a credible endorsement of its structural integrity.

Conversely, criticisms predominantly stem from several key factors: early transmission shudder and fluid leak issues on the first-gen dry dual-clutch models severely eroded buyer confidence; entry-level variants of the second-gen car were sparsely equipped, lacking vital comfort and safety features; and it struggled to maintain a compelling value proposition under intense pressure from discounted mainstream D-segment rivals like the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord, as well as emerging local new energy vehicles (NEVs) such as the BYD Han. Poor resale value (with a 3-year residual value of around 50.5%) further dented its appeal; additionally, some owners reported notable A-pillar wind noise at highway speeds, occasional infotainment freezing, and noticeable engine vibrations when the air conditioning compressor kicks in. With the arrival of trendier, youth-centric models like the Trumpchi Empow, the more conservative GA6 was gradually sidelined in brand resource allocation. Overall, while the GA6 was a competent and well-rounded D-segment sedan on paper, it ultimately failed to gain sufficient market traction amidst stiff brand perception hurdles, low resale values, and the rapid rise of electrification.
